OREGON SHADOW THEATRE PRESENTS: JACK AND THE DRAGON

The King and Princess Polly have varmint trouble. Might be a pesky Unicorn. Could be a cantankerous Giant Hog. Maybe a Fire-Breathing Dragon. Who can deal with these troublesome varmints? Why, Little Man Jack, of course, the world champion varmint whacker! Colorful shadow puppets and live banjo and hammer dulcimer music bring this Appalachian fairy tale to life.

The Oregon Shadow Theatre is a Portland based company specializing in the art of shadow puppetry. OST has twice been awarded the UNIMA Citation of Excellence, the award created by the late Jim Henson to honor the best in American puppetry. Their award-winning shadow plays have toured the United States and Canada, including performances at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Northwest Puppet Center in Seattle, and the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta.

LEGO STOP ANIMATION WORKSHOP WITH JARED JACOBS

Kidfort, Hackfort & Filmfort come together to welcome viral video master @goldyeller to Treefort 2019! Jared Jacobs will offer a one hour, interactive workshop for kids 5 and older, explaining how he makes his viral stop motion videos with Legos.
 
 
 

YOUTH VARIETY SHOWCASE

We showcase a lot of artists at Treefort, and not just adults, but kiddos too! Know a talented youngster? They can audition for a spot in Kidfort’s Youth Variety Showcase. Kidfort will be holding auditions for this year’s Youth Variety Showcase, where any kid who likes to sing, dance, act — anything! — can have a chance to shine during Treefort Music Fest 2019.

Tell your favorite little superstar to get ready: auditions will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Foothills School of Arts and Sciences from 10am to 2:30pm. MELANIE BILLARK’S “THE CACTUS GARDEN”

“The Cactus Garden” is a larger than life 3D dessert that can be experienced during the day and at night. Kids will be invited to decorate the cacti using neon markers that will glow in black lights. This project is an ecological awareness project shedding light on global warming and how it affects various ecosystems such as the dessert.
 
 
 
 

BOISE MUSIC LESSONS

Boise Music Lessons is on a mission to show everyone how fun and easy it is to play music. Whether you strum some chords, fiddle a tune, or just shake an egg, music is a wonderful way to connect and spend time with family and friends.

There will be a FREE WORKSHOP, “Fun with Folk Instruments”. Learn about the guitar, banjo, ukulele, violin/fiddle, mandolin, and cajón at this interactive demo. Boise Music Lessons student volunteers will give an overview of the instruments, and then invite you to try them all at various stations.

IT’S TOUGH BEING A WEREWOLF BY AMETHYST TAGNEY

Amethyst Tagney is an illustrator based in Boise, Idaho. With a BFA in illustration, Amethyst loves to draw animals, but can be seen doodling other things when she’s in the mood. Her art lives on pencil and paper and escapes to the wondrous world of Adobe Illustrator when she’s finished. WRITING & ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP

Local children’s book author Brandy Brune and illustrator Tara Kennedy will lead a workshop on writing and illustrating your own creative stories. BALLET FOLKLORICO MEXICO LINDO

Kidfort welcomes traditional Mexican folk dance company, Ballet Folklorico Mexico Lindo, from downtown Nampa, Idaho. They’ll be sharing and performing various dances from regions all around Mexico. It’ll be a cultural feast with authentic clothing and accessories, music and choreography. Their dances tell stories and share history. Join their interactive performance at Kidfort!
 
 
 
 
 

PATTY COSTELLO

Patty Costello will do a lively and engaging reading from her picture book “Catalina and the King’s Wall.” The story follows Catalina the royal baker and her plan to welcome and include everyone, no matter what they look like or where they are from. OLD BOISE MODEL RAILROAD CLUB

Old Boise Model Railroad Club has created a model of what Boise used to look like, featuring 1,800 square feet of model railroads that used to run through downtown. They will be showing their Old Boise Model Railroad for free as part of Kidfort at the Historic Pioneer Building on 6th & Main on Saturday, March 23, 10am-4pm.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

FORTCRAFT

Fortcraft is back! Fortcraft is an open, interactive building experience for kids and parents and anyone in between. Like a real world Minecraft you can use cardboard, tape, markers and chalk to build the fort of your dreams, add on to other forts, decorate existing structures or make something else entirely. Throughout the event, structures will be made, taken down and remade again into something new.

Under the direction of our amazing Treefort volunteers, challenges will be suggested. Kids can choose to participate in them or ignore them completely. There is no wrong way to Fortcraft.
 

BOISE ROCK SCHOOL

One of Treefort’s longtime sponsors who recently turned 10, Boise Rock School, will once again showcase some of their bands at this year’s Kidfort. In their 10 years of engaging with youth and teaching modern band/music skills in a holistic, group-orientated approach, Boise Rock School has truly transformed a generation of youth in the Treasure Valley and their reach only continues to grow.

Boise Rock School has one of the largest after school programs in the area, which alone is a great service, but for those of us keen on inspiring and supporting a vibrant music culture in Boise, having Boise Rock School nurturing current and future members of our music scene from as early as 3 years old is an immeasurable contribution to our community.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

KIDFORT DANCE BATTLE

Kidfort Dance Battle follows a tournament style, one versus one format and the top competitors leave with a prize! Dance battles will occur by age: pre-K, K-2nd grades and 3rd-6th grades. Dance battles are a competition. That doesn’t mean it’s all serious though! Competitions themselves are a good chance for dancers to showcase their own style. Win or lose, all dancers should feel hungry to grow more and work harder.

Everyone is connected through dance and music so it brings people together to form a tight community. The most important part is having fun by either watching dancers exchange or being a part of that exchange.That being said, audiences at a dance battle event are participating by giving feedback and energy to the dancers who in turn give energy back.
